"My Body, My Friend" – An Emotional-Intelligence Boosting Board Game

Help your child recognize and understand that emotions manifest not only in thoughts but also physically. This connection is essential for identifying, managing, and regulating emotions.

Help your child develop Emotional Intelligence

Developing emotional intelligence in children is crucial for fostering empathy, self-awareness, and emotional regulation. A game-based approach enhances this development, as play is a natural part of a child’s learning process.

How Can We Help Children Become More Aware of Their Emotions?

For a child to learn how to identify and recognize emotions, it’s essential to develop their emotional awareness in a playful, safe, and supportive way.

Start with Body Signals!

Body-awareness emotion games help children understand and become aware of how physical sensations connect to emotions, for example anxiety and tummy ache. These games teach kids to recognize and identify their bodily states and how these sensations reflect their emotional state.

What Children Can Learn Through These Games

A Meaningful and Fun Activity for Kids

My Body, My Friend Board Game

Are you looking for a fun way to enhance your children’s/students’ interoceptive awareness (the ability to identify bodily sensations), as well as their ability to recognize feelings and emotions, thereby expanding their social-emotional learning? This interoception board game is an engaging social-emotional learning activity that helps children better connect their bodily sensations with their emotions and feelings.

Interoception is one of our eight senses, allowing us to perceive signals from our body (bodily sensations), helping us identify feelings and emotions. For example, it helps us recognize when we are hungry, need to use the bathroom, or feel thirsty. Recognizing body signals is also essential for emotional regulation.

Bodily sensations let us know how we feel: for example, if we are frustrated (e.g., rapid heartbeat + aching stomach = frustration).

The good news is that most of my emotional intelligence games cost less than a latte at Starbucks. 🤩

Why Choose Play-Based Learning for Emotional Intelligence Development?

Developing emotional intelligence through play is highly effective because it naturally engages children and allows them to learn through experiences. Through play, your child can:

  • Recognize and understand emotions without feeling pressured.
  • Respond empathetically to others in shared board game situations.
  • Develop creative problem-solving skills in scenarios which mirror real-life situations.
  • Learn to manage stress and conflicts in a safe, fun environment.

Enhancing emotional intelligence through board games is not only effective but also creates joyful learning moments! 🌟

Why Start in Early Childhood?

Developing emotional intelligence (EQ) during early childhood is essential, as this is the stage at which foundational skills emerge, shaping a child’s emotional and social growth. Key reasons to start early include:

  • Preschool-aged children learn to recognize, understand, and express their own and others’ emotions. Strengthening EQ helps them handle stress, resolve conflicts, and build empathetic relationships.
  • Emotional intelligence enhances social skills such as cooperation, sharing, and problem-solving.
  • Research shows that EQ is a stronger predictor of future success than IQ. Early emotional intelligence development positively impacts academic performance, social relationships, and overall emotional well-being.
  • Strengthening emotion regulation skills helps prevent aggression, anxiety, and other behavioral challenges. Proper emotional support reduces frustration and aids in self-awareness and understanding of the world.
  • Lastly, it fosters resilience—the ability to cope successfully with changes and difficulties, which is vital for managing stressful situations and adapting to new experiences.

Playful, experience-based methods effectively support emotional intelligence development both in preschool programs and home environments.
