  2. Cut out the cards.

How to play the “How Would You Feel If…” Conversation starter game for kids:

Starting the Game:

  1. Choose the starting player (e.g., the youngest or whoever wants to go first). Play then continues clockwise.

Drawing a Question Card:

  1. The current player draws a card and reads the question aloud (with adult assistance if needed).
Example: “How would you feel if someone else got the last cookie?”

Expressing Feelings:

  1. The player shares how they would feel in the situation. For example, “I think I would feel sad” or “I’d feel angry.”
The facilitator encourages the child to elaborate on their feelings and helps if they struggle to find the right words.
Example: “Why would you feel sad? Maybe because you wanted the cookie?”

Providing Helpful Responses:

  1. After the child answers, the facilitator reads the helpful response from the back of the card to provide further context.
Example: “It’s natural to feel disappointed in this situation, but you can think about how you might get the last cookie next time!”

Discussion and Next Player:

  1. After discussing the situation, the next player draws a new card, and the game continues. Encourage others to share how they would feel, showing that people might respond differently to the same scenario.

Alternative Game with Bonus Emotion Cards:

Gameplay Steps:

  1. Preparing the Cards: Shuffle the cards and place them face-down in a pile. Place the Emotion Cards in an easily accessible stack.
  2. Taking Turns: The youngest player starts, and play proceeds clockwise.

Expressing Emotions:

  1. The starting player draws a card, reads the scenario, and selects an Emotion Card that best matches how they would feel.
Example: “How would you feel if someone else got the last cookie?” The player might choose the sadness or anger card.
If uncertain, the facilitator can provide guidance, such as asking, “Would you feel sad, angry, or something else?”

Naming and Explaining Feelings:

  1. After selecting an Emotion Card, the player explains their choice.
Example: “I’d feel sad because I didn’t get the cookie.”
The facilitator can ask follow-up questions to encourage more detailed responses, such as, “What else might you feel? Do you think you’d feel better later?”

Helpful Responses and Discussion:

  1. The facilitator reads the helpful response from the back of the card, providing additional insights about the situation and feelings.
Example: “It’s okay to feel sad, but maybe you can think about how you could share or have a cookie next time.”

Continuing the Game:

  1. The next player draws a new card, and the game continues.

Ending the Game:

The game can last as long as everyone enjoys it or until all question cards have been used. For preschoolers, keep the game flexible and play shorter rounds to maintain their interest.
